David and Tonya Harvey

Tonya and David are both natives of Baltimore, Maryland and graduates of local HBCUs (Coppin State University and Morgan State University). They were married for 12 years, until David’s sudden passing in 2002. They created the flag together 1 year after their marriage and worked diligently to have it displayed throughout the country and at several international locations.

The two appeared on television and radio, and in newspapers and magazines to promote the flag. They made a great start by getting endorsements from colleges, churches, schools, businesses, and several other organizations, including the NAACP.

David’s early death slowed down the process of spreading the word about the flag, but Tonya plans to continue their dream with the help of their daughters, Chloe and Kaylah Harvey.
