The Flag's History
The African American Flag was created by Tonya Clark and the late David Harvey in November 1991. They were inspired to create the flag while singing the National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, at an African American banquet that same year.
Tonya and David decided to create a flag to serve as a focal point for the anthem and to be a non-political symbol to represent the strength and beauty of the African American community through its powerful message “Black Stars Can Shine Too!” ™
A Message from Chloe and Kaylah Harvey
Hi there!
Your support in our mission of sharing The African American Flag with the world again is truly more appreciated than you know. The African American Flag was hiding in our grandparents’ attic for nearly two decades before we were called to continue the inspiring work our parents launched in the 90’s. We hope that our sharing the flag with you inspires you to pass its messages along and encourage African Americans in your community to strive for their highest potential.
As we continue spreading the messages of the flag through theatre, educational programs, social media, and more, we would greatly appreciate your support in our endeavors- whether it's sharing the flag with a friend, attending future events and presentations, or donating to help us build programming to support the African American Community and our youth! Thank you again for being here.
May we be the light we want to see <3

The Symbolism
When creating the flag David and Tonya wanted to make sure that the flag was packed with positive symbolism that generations of African Americans could adhere to and that highlights positive aspects of our culture and history. Below is a breakdown of the flag's symbolism and a downloadable symbolism sheet!
