Our Mission: “To assure and preserve the African American Flag for African Americans as a symbol that reaffirms the positive aspects of the African American community.”
-David and Tonya Harvey
The Original Creators
The African-American Flag was created by Tonya Harvey and the late David Harvey in November 1991. They were inspired to create the flag while singing the BIack National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, at an African American Banquet that same year. Tonya and David decided that there needed to be a flag to symbolize the meaning of the anthem and represent the African American community.
Symbolism
The African American Flag is rich with symbolism. It is meant to be a cultural, and nonpolitical flag to represent all black people in America.
HISTORY AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The African American Flag obtained many achievements before David Harvey’s passing in 2002, including recognition and endorsements from colleges, HBCUs, churches, schools, businesses, and several other organizations, including the NAACP.
The Future of the Flag
The African American Flag is now being managed by David and Tonya’s daughters, Chloe and Kaylah Harvey, with love and support from their younger sister Jairrah.
